I decided to use twitter as my source of data for the info graphic, i chose twitter because most bands/musicians use twitter in order to promote themselves and their music, also because its one of the most popular social networking sites. They use it to connect with fans and share information about upcoming gigs, releases or just general information about them. I went through all their 652 twitter followers and categorised them into categories that were relevant to the band like how many twitter followers had bowl hair cuts, how many were students, how many were musicians, how many were writers, how many had plenty to talk about and say about themselves, how many had nothing to say for themselves and others. I decided to use figures and symbols to represent these categories and how many people fell into each category because in their art work, they feature many small characters, i also wanted it to look busy and colourful to match the style of the band. The bands main logo 'Zoey Van Goey' looks hand written as it is uneven and rough, i tried to copy this by using a chalkboard font. For some of their album titles and track listings they also use a type that looks handwritten, so to stay in theme i used brush script as the type they use is rough and disordered. I used the colours red, orange and yellow for the 'Van' in 'Zoey Van Goey' because its the colours that are in every logo.

Now you're a story teller ...
Rational: I chose the band 'Zoey Van Goey' for this project, not only because i enjoy their music but because i particularly enjoyed their artwork. They are a small three person indie pop band from Glasgow who are signed to 'Chemikal Underground Records (UK)' and have released two albums 'The cage was unlocked all along' (2009) and 'Propeller versus wings' (2011). Their songs are mainly about romantic adventures and love. Their style is quite twee and their music is calm and gentle with an easy listening vibe. Their album artwork is vivid and busy with a lot of illustrations and colour, it looks like they are trying to tell the story of the album through the artwork, It has an element of fantasy in a imaginary world, there is so much going on that nothing makes sense when you first look at it. Their art work is very colourful and cheerful, i think its pretty and dainty.

I think your research has been good at looking into the band's style and album covers to influence your design and from your description you seem to capture most of their features.
ReplyDeleteI feel your images and some text go too close to the edge of the page and they need a bit of room to breath. I can understand your font choice as you were trying to mimic the bands logo but I feel it makes the overall effect look a little childish.
On the whole well done (and it must have taken you ages to look through that many twitters lol)
I really like how much information you've shown in this, cant believe yo managed to have the patience to do all 652 followers haha. Would make you feel special if you were one of the twitters followers and this info-graphic was published. Although i do agree with Jamie on the fact that the information is to close to the edges, maybe would look better with a small grid border, however i like that the second you look at the piece you can tell straight away what its about and through the soft colours and imagery. I like how you have made the "Key" and "Van" stand out with the warm contrasting colours. "I like it cause its good" :)
ReplyDeleteIt's very clear and gives you an excellant feel for the band's fanbase. The overall style clearly suggests to me that the band don't take themselves completely seriously and love to have fun with their music (is this the case??).
ReplyDeleteI agree with the whole 'border' thing mentioned by the others as it is quite busy. One other thing is that the blue colour used for the bowl cut figure doesn't really work. I don't know if it is just me but it seems to clash too much with the background.
I really like the fact that you have thought outside the box for this amy, your idea of looking at the different hairstyles of the bands twitter followers is really creative. You must have had a lot of patience. The content is really clear and with a quick glance it is obvious what your are trying to communicate with your data. Having read your rational you have clearly used the bands style as an influence in your info-graphic. My only critique would be that you are obviously communicating a lot of information so the info-graphic is very busy and can be a bit much on the eyes. So just the same as Jamie I would say think about the area surrounding the info-graphic. A border is essential and the leading could maybe use a little work.
ReplyDeleteI see you tried to convey the look of the cover. The very colourful and busy imagery as well as illustriousness of the text. I think that part is conveyed good. But.. It also kinda makes the design confusing. I mean, when I look at it it makes my eyes go mad and jump from one little guy to another. I think there should be something that would make the interpretation of the design easier - as you can see the illustrations on the covers have much detail do the colours do not mess them up.
ReplyDeleteI also very much like the symbolism of the information you are showing - you can see the bowl haircuts, and the instruments on the little people - which is communicating much without the audience having to read the legend. good! I just dont know why the yellow people have totally different silhouette than all the other ones?
Typography :
As I said you tried to convey the illustration style of the artist name, but I think it would look better if you tried to just DRAW a CLEAN title - which is what they did on the album, and not WRITE an UNCLEAR one. It would surely convey the album cover style more. Now its little too kiddy - while their album cover is still an advanced drawing.
And why are the letters in "KEY" different sizes?
P.S. sorry for being mean - I have drank too much coffee : s
